Online Room Design: What Should You Actually Receive?

An online room design service can help you make a coherent set of choices without arranging an in-person visit. The important question before paying is what you will receive. A colour consultation, a furnished layout and a complete product selection involve different work. Compare the written deliverables before comparing the headline price.

Start with the decision you need help making

Describe the problem in everyday terms: the living room has no clear seating area, you need a desk without losing the dining table, or several purchases do not work together. Say what must stay and what you can change. Include the country where the room is located, your furniture budget and whether you rent or own. This lets the designer identify the information they need before offering a scope.

A layout should explain where things go

Ask whether the package includes a measured furniture layout or a visual arrangement only. A usable furniture layout identifies the actual pieces, their dimensions and their positions relative to doors and windows. The information is only as reliable as the measurements provided. It does not automatically include construction drawings, a site survey or technical specifications for tradespeople.

Visuals should show the proposed direction

Agree on the number of views and what they represent. A concept image can communicate a palette and atmosphere; a visual based on selected products answers more detailed questions. Neither should silently substitute a different room shape or remove a fixed feature. Ask how differences between a product reference and the rendered image will be communicated.

A shopping list should make purchasing possible

A product list is useful when it includes specific references, sizes, colours, quantities and links to suppliers serving your location. Decide whether delivery and assembly are included in the furniture budget. Prices and availability can change after delivery of the project, so ask when they were checked and whether replacement suggestions are part of the agreed service. You should also know whether any links earn the provider a commission.

Define the revision before the first proposal

A revision may cover a change of colour, a cheaper table or a revised placement within the original brief. A second room or a completely new direction may require additional work. Ask how many rounds are included, how to send feedback and when the final version will arrive. Collect your comments in one message, with a reason for each change, so the designer can resolve them together.

What the written quote should specify

  • The room, goals and furniture that stays.
  • The exact documents and number of visuals delivered.
  • The shopping-list scope and delivery country.
  • The design fee, separate from furniture and any works.
  • The required information and when the delivery period starts.
  • The included revision and the cost of additional scope.

If you already have a preferred AI image, include it with the brief and explain which details you like. The designer can use it as a reference while checking the room itself. A good handover leaves you knowing what to keep, what to move, what to buy and which decisions still require confirmation.
